Heart & Soul

L.A. couple Destin Judy and Henry Plant brought a touch of funk to a family friend’s lush Laguna Beach estate for an elegantly playful wedding that guests will not soon forget.

The reception welcome table featured a custom sign-in globe from Letter & Adore.

After shedding her cathedral veil, the bride wore a flower crown.

Henry’s mom folded vintage white napkins into roses for every place setting.

The groom created the couple’s graphic invitations.

The bouquet included a variety of roses (alabaster, O’Hara, majolica, Caramel Antike), along with Queen Anne’s lace and zebra peasant feathers.

Destin walked down the aisle in sparkly Valentino Milano pumps and changed into Badgley Mischka Lovely sandals for the party.

L.A. isn’t the easiest place to find love, so Destin Judy and Henry Plant put their fate in the hands of online dating. “OkCupid rated us as an 88 percent match,” recalls Destin. They bonded over a shared interest in old-town funk and enjoyed many music-filled nights at The Echo. After dating for two years, Henry proposed quietly over Thanksgiving weekend on the beach in Three Arch Bay, just down the street from his family home in Laguna Beach. The newly engaged couple spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with everyone who was in town for the holiday. In their case, OkCupid proved a very successful matchmaker.

Inspired by the opening scene of Transparent’s second season, Destin and Henry dreamt up their very own version of a white party. Black-and-white graphics, pops of copper and whimsical elements—like zebra feathers and 1,000 handmade paper cranes hanging above the checkered dance floor—decorated the private estate in Laguna Beach. The DJ set up a screen and played vintage Soul Train videos to inspire dance moves at the reception, and bartenders mixed up signature Motown Mules.

For dessert, they served an all-white garden-rose cake with vanilla tiers, strawberry ganache and fresh strawberries; plus copper-dipped arrow cookies (a nod to the couple’s OkCupid beginnings), vegan lemon bars, mini cupcakes and ice pops. “I grew up in the South and have quite a sweet tooth,” says Destin. At the end of the night, guests rode a chartered Laguna Beach trolley back to the hotel.

Spending enough quality time with out-of-town guests was a priority for the couple, so they extended their stay locally at The Inn at Laguna Beach and then took a mini-moon in Santa Barbara. Afterward, the newlyweds took an adventurous trip to Myanmar, traveling from Yangon to Bagan and Inle Lake, with guidance from Myanmar Shalom Travel & Tour.
