Gray Matter

Things are black and white when it comes to whether event planner Jim Gray should be part of your special day.

With 26 years of event-planning experience under his fashionable belt—including an 18-year stint as the revered social catering service manager at The Houstonian—Jim Gray knows how to throw a fabulous party. As a result, Houston socialites are already swarming his newly launched full-service event planning company, Grayhouse Events Atelier, where the industry star is getting a fresh start all on his own (well, plus a handful of assistants). People who know Gray’s reputation won’t be surprised to hear he’s being booked so far in advance that he has an October 2018 wedding on the books—for a bride who hasn’t even been proposed to yet, nonetheless. Her parents wanted to make sure they got the guy. As for his success, it’s all in the details, Gray says: “I even attended a bride’s engagement photo shoot at her family ranch an hour outside of Houston; they were surprised I helped book the hair and makeup for a trial run, and even stopped by the barbershop to check on the groom!” Gray likes to have his finger on the pulse of everything going on for an event, no matter how small the detail, to make sure things go off without a hitch—especially when you’re getting hitched. “It’s a crazy juggling act on the day of; I like to make sure I am at the church orchestrating everything from the hair and makeup to the walk down the aisle,” he says. “Any time my client turns around, either I am or one of my assistants is there to ask, “What do you need?’” This is a man who’s even gone to dress appointments with a client, at request. For those who want every last big-day detail taken care of, the decision’s easy. Gray certainly goes the extra mile!
