Drift Away

An intimate ceremony with close friends and family in an island setting was a dream come true for an Aussie and his American bride.

Tricia wore an ethereal Christos gown and Andy wore a blue M.J. Bale suit

Waterfront family-style tables were adorned with hydrangeas and roses as well as driftwood and pineapples.

As the sun set, garden lighting and candlelit lanterns added to the romantic ambiance

Not even oceans could keep Tricia Yarger and Andy Hopkins apart. Their chance encounter occurred in the Hamptons when a work trip brought Andy from Sydney (he’s Australian) to New York in 2013. The following year, the couple rendezvoused in romantic places around the world like the French Alps. When Andy proposed after dinner at New York’s famous date night restaurant, One If By Land, Two If By Sea, Tricia was already smitten. Then the couple jet-setted off to Bermuda to celebrate.

For their nuptials, Tricia and Andy chose The Cove, Eleuthera, an idyllic luxury boutique hotel in the Bahamas. “We wanted a destination wedding in a place where our guests from all over the world could stay for a long weekend,” says Tricia. “The natural beauty speaks for itself, and it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves!”

Wedding planner Mish Waserman, also Australian, incorporated an elegant, beachy chic theme with subtle shades of navy, soft pink, earthy green and natural elements like driftwood, palms and pineapples. The couple’s international guests enjoyed noshing on fresh-from-the-sea dishes, as well as coconut-flavored wedding cake—Tricia’s favorite.

The most memorable part of the evening for Tricia was watching her American family and friends celebrate with Andy’s Australian loved ones. For Andy, it was “the singing and dancing, including our versions of Australian classics that the Americans enjoyed learning once we took over the microphones, after the band was packed up,” that he fondly remembers.

After a picture-perfect wedding, the couple traded a getaway car for a speedboat to Harbour Island, where they spent a few nights at the Ocean View Club. A few months later, they escaped to Asia for their official honeymoon.
