Bridal Sign Up

Meghan Herlihy & Jon Pfotenhauer

June 13, 2015 | St. John Neumann Catholic Church, The Salamander Resort

Meghan’s vision for the wedding was to bring “the outside indoors.” Long tables featured centerpieces with flowers like Italian ruscus, ivy tendrils and baby eucalyptus. (2/5)

The bridesmaids wore soft shades of pink and grey. (3/5)

The cake, from Kendall’s Cakes in Falls Church, Va., featured fresh roses atop a simple white tiered design. (4/5)

The bride selected Badgley Mischka shoes to wear with her Tara Keely gown and her mother’s veil. (5/5)

Meghan and Jon’s classic high-school-sweethearts love story started at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va., and extended throughout their college years—she at William & Mary, he at University of Virginia—and culminated with a Valentine’s Day weekend proposal during Meghan’s senior year. Friends first, the pair started dating during Meghan’s junior year and continued through college. The proposal came the day after Valentine’s Day because the ring got caught in transit, thanks to a snowstorm. After a covert meeting with a courier at a local Five Guys, Jon proposed at Williamsburg’s Eagles Restaurant.

With strong ties to two Virginia universities, the pair wanted to pay tribute to where their love story unfolded. Instead of numbers, tables were named after places at UVA and William & Mary. The cocktail hour included games of cornhole with both school’s logos painted on the boards.

The day was most definitely a family affair. Jon’s grandfather, a Lutheran minister, married Meghan and Jon. The wedding date was the same as Meghan’s paternal grandparents and great grandparents years before—and her dad incorporated her great-great grandfather’s wedding speech into his own toast. After dinner and dancing, the couple handed out their favorite cookies—oatmeal chocolate chip for her, snickerdoodle for him—before heading to their honeymoon at a villa in St. Bart’s.

“Have a day-of kit with safety pins and other emergency items. The shoulder of my dress split about 10 minutes into the reception. We ended up trying to tape it.. Jon was running all over the hotel trying to find a safety pin, which finally worked,” says Meghan.
