Kitchen Aid!

When Aleka Kim opened a pop-up shop in her Bulthaup showroom in San Diego’s East Village, she hoped a rotating selection of eye candy would catch the attention of passersby. “I wanted to connect with my neighbors,” says Kim, who regularly scouts design trends from Europe to Asia. “Custom kitchens are something people only do once in a lifetime, but designs are always changing.” Now a permanent fixture at Bulthaup, The Kitchery stocks cooking and dining accessories ranging from chopsticks and coffee gadgets to stylish small appliances. “Our selection is about modern design and function,” she says. “We’re not trying to be Williams-Sonoma, filling every gap.” Among the most popular items at The Kitchery? Brightly colored fire extinguishers, which should prove useful to cooks distracted by all those attractive objects. 777 J St., 619.237.5510,
