San Diego Opera lovers gathered at The US Grant to fete Dame Zandra Rhodes at the 2018 San Diego Opera Ball.
THE PARTY A crowd of San Diego’s most influential gathered April 7 at The US Grant Hotel to honor Dame Zandra Rhodes, who began designing costumes for the San Diego Opera in 2001 and sits on its board, and to raise money to support the opera company’s many endeavors. Directed to dress as “rosy raconteurs,” some women wore Rhodes’ own exuberant designs. THE SCENE A VIP reception began in the lobby, with a pink carpet, cocktails and silent auction, hosted by event chair Sherry Ahern. Guests enjoyed dinner in a ballroom dripping with pink floral arrangements by CT Designs. A live auction had SDO’s general director, David Bennett, offering not one, but two private meals cooked by himself; a bidding war over a week at Rancho La Puerta; and a fabulous South Sea pearl and diamond brooch, among its prizes. THE HIGHLIGHTS During the auction, The Alexander & Eva Nemeth Foundation presented a $50K matching grant to underwrite Student Night at the opera, and Lee and Frank Goldberg made a donation to match the challenge. During the paddle raise, the Nemeth Foundation made an additional grant, which was also matched. -Andrea Bennett
