Ceramics for the Rest of Us

Year & Day wants to help you up your dinner party game without going broke.

 

Cooking isn't Kathryn Duryea's idea of a good time. The 36-year-old founder of the three-month-old tableware company Year & Day loves to entertain in her Pacific Heights apartment, but preferably with someone else’s food. (Takeout from Out the Door is one favorite.) “There’s something really nice about eating in a home, pacing the night at your own cadence,” she says. “But I wouldn’t subject guests to my cooking experiments.”

What she lacks in culinary proficiency, however, she makes up for in design chops. Having inherited her mother’s passion for collecting china, she spent four years at Tiffany & Co.—including a stint on its tableware team—after graduating from Stanford’s business school.

Her debut line from Year & Day features a stunning but simple collection of modern, semi-matte-glazed ceramics, wine and drinking glasses, and flatware in three finishes. To manufacture the ceramics and flatware, she partnered with family-run factories in Portugal with more than a century of experience.

Yet unlike the offerings of many of Year & Day’s aesthetic contemporaries, all the pieces are dishwasher safe and priced starting at $11—so “if you break a plate, you won’t have to save up multiple paychecks to replace it.”
