Fashion frenzy over an almost-local line

What’s flying off the racks here right now is not one of the usual New York labels—it’s homegrown (again, almost) designer Dean Hutchinson’s new a’bout clothing line at the Grimm sisters’ Carrots boutique in Jackson Square. Hutchinson moved to Toronto in 2008, where his pieces are produced, but for 15 years before that, he designed here—first out of a Sacramento Street showroom catering to ladies who lunch, work, or do both, and later at a design lab on Sutter Street, where gallerists ordered his asymmetrical suits. Hutchinson first met the Grimm sisters after their store manager bought pants from him for their mother. Now, design-conscious women of all ages are snapping up his drapey minimalist shirts, tanks, skirts, and jackets faster than the Grimms can reorder them. For fall, they’re collaborating with Hutchinson and his design partner, Yunchieh Chang, to create a sexy pencil dress and sleek skirt, and they’ll be devoting a shop within their shop to his line. Not since Alexander Wang decamped to the East Coast has a new look debuted here incited such lust. 843 Montgomery St., S.F., 415-834-9040
