Sappy Sweet

The fabulously talented Alan Cumming performs at the Oshman Family JCC.

Prolific actor, producer and singer Alan Cumming—best-known for his performances on Broadway, hit TV show The Good Wife, and films including Emma and X2: X-Men United—brings Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs to the Oshman Family JCC April 14 in his only Bay Area performance. Hailed by reviewers as “an emotional firestorm,” Cumming’s performance features songs by the likes of Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga and Billy Joel that mark poignant moments in his life. Here, Cumming reveals his thoughts on San Francisco and what to expect from the show.

What do you love the most about San Francisco?
I come to San Francisco in bursts, and I always find something surprising about it—something new and magical. I would describe San Francisco as an occasional lover.

How did you choose which songs to include in your show?
Often, songs keep coming back to you. For instance, I never thought I would sing ‘Complicated’ by Avril Lavigne, but it’s what the song is about that matters.

Who inspires you?
I’m inspired by people who keep at it and who, artistically and sociopolitically, turn back and give a hand to others.

How do you think this program and song selection will resonate with the tech-obsessed?
I hope they will put their phones down and listen to me because, if not, I will come after them.
