After seven years, attendees of the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships have seen their share of sleek horses, flouncy hats and free-flowing Dom, but, this year, they are in for an extraordinary sight, as elite polo champion Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras takes the field Nov. 10 and 11. “This is my first time [at this event],” he says. “I’m looking forward to it. I know some of the guys playing, so this is going to be fun.”
Born in Argentina, Figueras has been involved in the sport nearly his entire life and shares his passion with Delfina Blaquier, his beautiful wife; and their four children, ranging in age from 5 to 18. (His eldest, Hilario, is already playing polo on the professional level.) The champ’s love for children and polo also extends to his role as ambassador for Sentebale, a charity founded by his friends Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso to support the well-being of children affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. “I’m very humbled to help,” Figueras says.
In all his world travels, Figueras, who many recognize as the face (and body) of Ralph Lauren’s Polo fragrance for 18 years, has only visited Scottsdale once prior, for a Ralph Lauren/L’Oréal Conference, and managed to see Taliesin West (“I loved architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s house,” he recalls), so, this year, fans just might spot him hiking Camelback or catching a Cardinals game. But he will definitely make his time count when playing the Sport of Kings in the Beverly Hills of the Desert. “I’m going to do a lot of riding and a lot of playing,” he says. “I’m there to play polo.” GA tickets $25 in advance, $35 at the door; all-access VIP pass, $500 in advance, WestWorld of Scottsdale’s Polo Field
