The Bold & Beautiful

An of-the-moment bag for the spring season.

Pompom bag, $3,990, by CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC, similar styles at calvinklein.com

This spring, designers are focusing on optimism in the form of unapologetically bold color.

A prime example: Raf Simons’ sophomore runway collection for Calvin Klein, where he continued to exhibit his prolific take on American fashion. This season that meant merging unconventional materials—think rubber and a plastic-nylon hybrid version of traditional camping fabrics—with classic associations of U.S. culture from the Wild West to iconic ’80s horror films to the prim and proper silhouettes of the 1950s.

However, none was more Americana-centric than Simons’ inventive take on the pompom, turning the otherwise common item into the “it” accessory for the season ahead. With a carryall pouch resembling the silhouette of a small bucket bag at its core, long strips of tiered-leather fringe carefully conceal the actual handbag to let the tangerine and metallic rose-gold hues prevail, thus creating what is surely a fashion first: an of-the-moment bag that looks even better coming and going than it does sitting still on display.
